To start a keyword search

  1. Click the New Keyword Search link below the Bib Record Search tab.

  2. Choose the search index that you want to use from one or more of the Search By drop-down lists.

  3. Enter a search term in the field that corresponds to the search index you selected from the Search By drop-down list.

  4. Tip:   When searching UN Document Symbols, Sales Numbers, Call Numbers or UN Document Series Symbols, omit the punctuation marks in your search string.
    Example: To search for UN Document Symbol A/58/251, put A58251 in the search box.



    Tip:  You can also search for items using "wildcard" symbols. A wildcard is a symbol that represents a group of unknown search criteria.

    If you do not know the exact term you want to search for, you may be able to enter part of a word followed by a wildcard symbol. The wildcard symbols are: a question mark (?) representing one unknown letter, an asterisk (*) representing one or more unknown letters.

    Example 1: To search for all UN documents issued during the 58th General Assembly, enter search string "ARES58?", UNBISnet will return results with UN Document Symbol of "A/RES/58/8", "A/RES/58/9", "A/RES/58/7", etc. While, if you enter search string "ARES58*", UNBISnet will return results with UN Document Symbol of "A/RES/58/282", "A/RES/58/271A-C", "A/RES/58/1B", etc.

    Example 2: To search for all the authors whose last name begins with the prefix "steven", you would enter "steven*" as the search criteria. UNBISnet would return results from authors named "Stevens", "Stevenson", "Stevensen", etc.



  5. Choose the match options from the drop-down list.

  6. If you are searching by multiple criteria, choose the Or, And, or Not operators from the drop-down lists. (These operators let you include or exclude certain criteria from your search.)

  1. You can refine your search by using the limit options taht are available in the Limits drop-down list.

  2. Limit on date: Choose a Year of Publication and operator, then enter the 4-digit year under User Defined Limits.

  3. Sorting: Choose the sorting option that you want from the Sorting drop-down list.

  4. Click Go.

  2. Words from all subjects including personal name, corporate name and conference name used as subjects, titles of conventions, declarations as well as terms from UNBIS Thesaurus.

    Examples:
    criminal tribunal rwanda - To find records concerned with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

    Quick Tips:

  3. Title (All)

  4. Words from all title fields, including title, uniform title, modified title and alternate titles, series and serial titles.

    Examples:
    report minugua - To find records where the title fields include the words report and MINUGUA.
    wom?n emancipation - To find records where title contain the words emancipation and women or woman.

  5. Title and Notes

  6. Words from all title fields as well as from note fields.

    Examples:
    regional initiative burundi - To find records where the title or note fields include the words regional, initiative and Burundi.
    wom?n emancipation - To find records containing the words emancipation and women or woman.

  7. Author

  8. Words from all author fields, including personal names, corporate and conference names.

    Examples:
    ghali - To find items authored by Boutros Boutros Ghali.
    human rights research and education centre - To find items authored by the University of Ottawa. Human Rights Research and Education Centre.

  9. UN Doc. Symb./Sales Nos

  10. UN document symbol and UN sales number.

    Quick Tips: Input the symbol or number as a Keyword Search String:
    To Search a UN Document Symbol or UN Sales Number as a keyword, all punctuation marks should be dropped, for example: A/RES/57/270 should be input as ARES57270.
    UN Sales Numbers are recorded in UNBIS records starting with the year. For example: E.95.XIV.2 is recorded as 95XIV2


    Examples:
    ARES57* - To find resolutions issued by General Assembly in its 57th session.
    95XIV* - To find all records issued in 1995 for UN sales category XIV.

  11. Action Date

  12. Keyword search of action date field. Action date is the vote date or speech date, which could be different from the publication date of the document. The format of the action date is "YYYYMMDD". For example: 20021001 represents October 1st, 2002.

    Action Date is usually combined with other keyword search to provide a limit on the date.

    Quick Tips:
    Numbers may be truncated.
    for example: 2002* will retrieve all records with the action date falling into the year 2002.

  13. Bib No.

  14. Bib number is system generated number, which is not duplicated. It is a quick tool for the librarians to locate a specific record.

  15. Call Number

  16. Keyword search of the call number field.

    Quick Tips: Input Call Number as a Keyword Search String:
    To Search a Call Number as a keyword, all punctuation marks should be dropped, for example: DP(063.5)/D3/LES/1997-98 should be input as DP0635D3LES199798.

    Numbers may be truncated.

    Examples:
    REF413* - To find dictionaries in the General Reference Collection of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library.

  17. Country of Publication

  18. To search for publications from a particular country. Use the three letter ISO code for that country. Click to view the country codes.

    Examples:
    chn - To search all records published in China.
    usa - To search all records published in America.

  19. General Keyword

  20. Words from author fields, title and notes fields and subject fields and symbols from UN Document Symbol fields and UN Document Series Symbol fields as well as words from local notes fields and publisher field.

    Quick Tips:
    Because the results from a General Keyword search may be very large, words that would commenly appeared in the fields should be avoided, e.g., Committee, Commission. Use words that are distinctive to get a better result.

  28. Keyword search of publication date field. The format of publication date is "YYYYMMDD". For example: 20021001 represents October 1st, 2002.

  34. Words from subject fields that are identified as primary subjects. Dag Hammarskjöld Library started to identify primary subject from 1999. Thus, search by this index can only find records that are catalogued after 1999.

    Quick Tips:
    All primary subjects are UNBIS thesaurus terms.

  35. Subject (Thesaurus Term)

  36. Words from subject fields that are included in the UNBIS Thesaurus. Proper names, except for geographical names, are excluded.

    Examples:
    vital statistics mexico - To find records concerned with vital statistics in Mexico
    refugees not kosovo or eritrea - To find records concerned with refugees but not refugees from kosovo or eritrea

    Examples:
    child rights series - To find titles in the "Innocenti occasional papers. Child rights series."

    Type of Material code is usually combined with other keyword search to get better result.

    Quick Tips: Type of Material Code is also provided as a predefined limit. If you can not remember the code, you can select it from the limit options.

  45. UN Document Series Symbol

  46. Keyword search of UN document series symbols. The UN documents series symbols are used to group the documents issued in a series from a particular issuing agency. The documents of the UN Security Council are issued in the S/ series; the designation for sub-bodies of the Security Council will include S/ followed by another component, for example, S/AC.26/ for the UN Compensation Commission. Document series are often paired with a designation of the session for which the document has been issued, examples, S/ 54 for the 54th year of the Security Council, A/ 54 for the 54th session of the General Assembly.

    Quick Tips: Input the UN Document Series Symbol as a Keyword Search String:
    To Search a UN Document Series Symbol as a keyword, all punctuation marks should be dropped, for example: A/57 should be input as A57.


    Examples:
    A57 - To find documents issued by General Assembly in its 57th session.
    ECN453 - To find documents issued by the UN Commission for Human Rights in its 53th session (UN Document Symbol starts with E/CN.4/1997/...).
